The Pinnacle 3L Rain Pant is strategically designed for running, with articulated seaming that moves with your stride, two-way thigh zips that open into your base layer pockets, and, most importantly, full compliance with mandatory weather gear requirements for ultra races. It all starts with a supple, low-noise fabric that’s ultra lightweight and packs down small enough for easy stowing. Extra-long, two-way ankle zips let you pull them on and off over your shoes, and unzipping from the top lets heat escape from around your calves. Up at the thighs, a second pair of two-way zips open straight into the pockets of the tights of half tights you have on underneath, keeping fuel, hydration, or your phone within reach and out of the elements. Let the rain keep coming, while you keep moving.

Feature Highlights

Zip Vent Access

Two-way thigh zips line up with the pockets on your Janji Trail Half Tights and Trail Tights (and compatible with side pocket placement of most other tights and compressive shorts), so you can quickly reach for fuel, hydration or your phone while limiting rain exposure. Open them from the bottom for added ventilation.

Easy On/Off

Knee-length, two-way ankle zips make for easy on/off over shoes. Unzip from the top to vent out your calves while the hem stays in place with a snap closure to conceal the zipper end.

Articulated, Straight Leg

Our articulated seaming wraps the legs with a slight curvature for better running ergonomics. The straight leg design allows you to easily wear midweight or heavier base layers underneath without bunching.

Adjustable Hems

A bungee at the center back of each ankle lets you cinch the straight-leg opening to fine-tune the fit while reducing snags from branches or brush on narrow singletrack.

Balancing Breathability with Waterproofing

71gsm 3-layer waterproof nylon is rated 20K/25K to hold off rain, while still allowing the fabric to breathe when you’re working hard.

Stowable Pocket

Stows into an internal back mesh pocket for easy packability.

FAQ Aid Station

How waterproof are these rain pants?

UTMB® and most other ultras require waterproof protection above 10K in their emergency weather kits. All of Janji’s waterproof layers exceed this, and we third-party test our fabrics to ensure they meet a real-world 20K rating.

In 2023 we switched from C6 DWR to PFAS-free C0 DWR, which affects how long a fabric sheds water. Janji made the move to stop adding intentional PFAS across our entire product line years ahead of many of our peers and before it was mandatory via regulation, because we simply believe it's the best decision for people and the planet. We mention this however, because we have seen a drop in waterproof protection. The same exact waterproof fabric with C6 DWR vs C0 DWR will have different waterproof ratings.

For our Pinnacle 3L, we wanted this kit to be as light and packable as possible while maintaining a 20K waterproof rating. We field tested and lab tested lighter, more breathable waterproof fabrics, but they failed our waterproof benchmark. We found the <60gsm options wet out far too quickly. In balancing durable waterproof protection, with exceptional breathability and packability, we landed on our ultralight 71gsm fabric that keeps you comfortable for multiple hours in a downpour. With any waterproof fabric this light, do note that saturation is a matter of when, not if.

How do these rain pants fit?

They’re a straight-leg cut and have enough room to layer over your tights or shorts without feeling bunched up. Articulated construction around the knee lets you bend and stride naturally. The women’s inseam is 29.5in/75cm. The ankle zips open wide enough to get the pants on or off without taking your shoes off.

What are the pockets like?

These rain pants have one internal, back hanging mesh pocket to stow the pants in. When designing these layers as ultralight, packable rain protection to deploy quickly we realized a couple things. One: almost under no circumstance would someone use this kit without a vest or pack and base tights or shorts. Two: Janji’s existing gear is far better suited to carrying things, more bounceproof, more comfortable, than an ultralight rain shell. We designed this kit all around easily accessing those underneath base layers and pockets*, rather than carrying things on their own.

*Tight zips align with Janji’s M’s Trail Tight, M’s Trail Half Tights, W’s ⅞ Trail Tight, W’s Flux Tight, W’s Pace Shorts, M’s Boreal Fleece Tight, W’s Aurora Fleece Tight.

What is the difference between 2.5L and 3L waterproof fabrics?

3L fabrics are constructed with:

  • An outer later, or face fabric, that’s a durable material like a nylon or polyester, meant to protect against abrasion or ripping.
  • A middle layer, the waterproof membrane, like a GORE-TEX or Pertex® that’s laminated to the outer layer. It allows sweat to escape, but prevents rain or wind from getting in.
  • An inner layer, which is a softer fabric like tricot backing or a type of mesh, bonded directly to the waterproof membrane to protect it and maintain breathability.

2.5L fabrics have a very similar construction, but the main difference is in the inner layer. In 2.5L fabrics, the inner layer is a half fabric: a thin protective coating or print rather than a full fabric lining. 2.5L fabrics can be lighter, but are less durable over time, as well as less waterproof and less breathable. The half layer print on the interior doesn’t manage moisture as well as the full tricot layer of a 3L.

What is a 2-way zip vent?

Having 2-way zipper heads means you can open the zip from either the top or bottom. We tested this with a variety of tights and shorts to make sure access was easy. Fully open, these upper and ankle zips function like air intake vents for maximum airflow.
