UTMB® and most other ultras require waterproof protection above 10K in their emergency weather kits. All of Janji’s waterproof layers exceed this, and we third-party test our fabrics to ensure they meet a real-world 20K rating.
In 2023 we switched from C6 DWR to PFAS-free C0 DWR, which affects how long a fabric sheds water. Janji made the move to stop adding intentional PFAS across our entire product line years ahead of many of our peers and before it was mandatory via regulation, because we simply believe it's the best decision for people and the planet. We mention this however, because we have seen a drop in waterproof protection. The same exact waterproof fabric with C6 DWR vs C0 DWR will have different waterproof ratings.
For our Pinnacle 3L, we wanted this kit to be as light and packable as possible while maintaining a 20K waterproof rating. We field tested and lab tested lighter, more breathable waterproof fabrics, but they failed our waterproof benchmark. We found the <60gsm options wet out far too quickly. In balancing durable waterproof protection, with exceptional breathability and packability, we landed on our ultralight 71gsm fabric that keeps you comfortable for multiple hours in a downpour. With any waterproof fabric this light, do note that saturation is a matter of when, not if.
