I normally don't write reviews for items, but feel the need to do so after my last misadventure with these shorts. I'm an endurance runner and put these shorts through a lot of big runs and adventures, but this one takes the cake. Me and my friends decided to hike Mt. Whitney. We are all extremely fit and after a season of mountain training and having just completed the Bishop High Sierras Ultra two weeks prior, I figured I'd put my training and acclimatization to the test. On the day of, I wore these shorts along with a t-shirt and other lite gear essentials. I had planned to bring my ski pants but to save space in my pack, I removed them because we planned to hike, summit, and descend within a day.
For those who are not aware on Mt. Whitney, around mile 7, you come to the trail camp. When there is still a significant amount of snow on the mountain, you cannot take the 99 switchbacks up to the higher reaches of the mountain. Instead you have to climb up a 500m, almost vertical snow and ice incline called "the chute", which is treacherous at best when it is soft and slushy as the sun shines on it. However, what goes up must go down (eventually). By the time we started descending in the afternoon after summiting, the shadows had already blanketed the chute and the surface had started to freeze over. I glissaded down this treacherous thing; slowly and painfully. And by glissaded I mean my ass got absolutely shredded by the snow and ice. I was like a flayed thing when I got down to the bottom of the chute. I took an ice axe to the leg, the skin on my elbow was in tatters, and the backside of me was absolutely cheese-grated against the surface of the chute. The only thing keeping me together was these friggin shorts. The logo didn't even get scraped off.
The hike was great but after 21 hours of technical climbing and hiking, I think I'll pass on experiencing Whitney again. The shorts on the other hand, 11/10. Janji pls sponsor me so I can buy more of these.
